GENERAL INTRODUCTION

WHO WE ARE
Southwestern Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is one of four regional centers within the Connecticut AHEC Program, which is located at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington. The other AHEC centers are located strategically throughout the state:

The Connecticut AHEC Program, through which the four AHECs are implemented, was established in 1995 by the Connecticut General Assembly, and received its initial federal funding from Human Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in 1997.

Southwestern AHEC was established in 1998 as a center to serve southern Fairfield and New Haven counties. In January 2006 Southwestern AHEC converted into an independent 501(C)3 non-profit agency, located in Trumbull, CT.

Currently we a 501(c)3, not for profit organization, working to assist communities in addressing health care needs.

VISION
The universe of communities that we serve will enjoy optimal access to quality healthcare without regard to socio-economic status.

MISSION
To enhance access to quality health care for all, particularly primary and preventive care.

STRATEGY
Improve the quantity and distribution of healthcare professionals through academic and community partnerships.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES
• Vibrant partnerships and collaborations are critical for a healthy community.
• Schools, at all levels, play a significant role in providing consumers and health care professionals with knowledge and resources to promote quality of life.
• Continual monitoring and evaluation are key to documenting the progress and further needs of a community with respect to access to healthcare.
